It all started in 1999…

Marcus met Badialy Cissoko in Los Angeles, CA. Cissoko, a kora player from the family of griots and kora players in Dakar Senegal, had recently moved there like Miller and the two found a musical kinship. At the time, Miller was the drummer for the Watts Prophets and his band mate, bassist Mark Sims, seemed a perfect fit for the new project. Miller set up a rehearsal and BoujouBumBastick was formed.

During their brief time together, the group recorded two albums and released one, All Same to God, for the University Soul Records label. In 2001, they performed at the NEMO festival in Boston and were the opening act for the Reggae on the River festival in Humboldt, CA.

The group’s legacy is that of being one of the first groups to combine traditional Kora music with Western Drums & Bass. The music also featured Badialy’s vocal prowess and dynamic multi-language rapping fluidity.
