West Afri-(LA) documents the introduction of West African drum & dance culture to Los Angeles, CA and the West Coast of North America in the early 1970’s. The series highlights the influence of Babatunde Olatunji and Katherine Dunham on several generations of West African cultural enthusiasts. Features interviews with Nzingha Camara, Leon Mobley, Lula Washington, Assane Konte, and many more.

On Saturday night October 8, 2022, the Bayou came to L.A. Marcus L. Miller’s Afro-Fusion Project featuring Big Chief Shaka Zulu performed their debut set for a packed house at the William Grant Still art center. The music is a blend of World/Afro Beat grooves with the distinctive vocal chants inherent to the New Orleans Black Masking Indians tradition.
